McCain shifting his stance on Illegal Immigration?

Nothing like sinking poll numbers and matching fund raising results to convince a Presidential candidate that he has staked out the wrong position on a key election issue.

For months, McCain has been telling New Hampshire audiences that he still believes in the immigration plan that failed in Congress earlier this year but that he now realizes that none of its components — including allowing millions of illegal immigrants to eventually earn legal status — can be enacted until the borders are secured first.

I like McCain’s position on some issues, like Iraq for example, but on too many issues he seems entirely too willing to negotiate away key postions in order to achieve a bi-partisian compromise deal.
