Iranian Nuke program not a closed issue
From ABC News
The United States rejected on Wednesday Iran’s claim that its nuclear program is a “closed” matter and said it would keep pushing for fresh U.N. Security Council sanctions that are resisted by China and Russia.
The West accuses Iran of seeking to develop atomic weapons under the cover of a civil nuclear program. Iran denies this, saying its program is to produce power so that it can export more of its valuable gas and oil.
Regardless what the UNSC does, or even if Russia and China Veto any resolution out of the Security Council, France’s shift highlighted by President Nicolas Sarkozy’s speech at the UN ensures that the issue is anything but closed.
There will not be peace in the world if the international community falters in the face of the proliferation of nuclear arms,” Sarkozy said. The Iranian crisis will only be resolved if firmness and dialogue go hand-in-hand.”
Iran desperately needs high tech equipment not just for its nuclear program but in many other aspects of its economy. With France the U.S., Germany & Britain pushing for firmness and dialogue either the UNSC follows through or the US & EU could pursue those sanctions independently. Since the technology that Iran needs comes from the west what the UNSC does or doesn’t do is pretty much irrelevant.
Bottom Line Case Not Closed:
