Chavez to get Decree Powers

Venezuelan lawmakers said Monday they would give President Hugo Chavez special powers to make changes to the country’s oil, gas and electricity industries by presidential decree.

National Assembly President Cilia Flores said lawmakers loyal to Chavez would approve an “enabling law” allowing the leader to pass measures by decree for 18 months in the “energy sphere” in addition to 10 other areas announced earlier, ranging from the economy to defense.

Other plans include rewriting the constitution and expects to hold a referendum on the changes by the end of the year.

Among the changes, Chavez has proposed doing away with presidential term limits to allow for indefinite re-election. Term limits currently bar him from running again in 2012.

Chavez claims he has no plan to seize private property yet recent statements on his weekly television show indicate otherwise.

Chavez recently announced plans for a “luxury tax” targeting second homes, art collections and expensive cars that would be aimed at redistributing wealth to the poor.

“Oh, you have a yacht? Perfect, give to me, buddy,” he said at the time. “You have a house where you live and another one by sea … You have some marvelous art collections _ come here, buddy.”

The same article brings out memories of Soviet Style Reeducation camps..

During a live broadcast from a cattle ranch in Venezuela’s central plains, Chavez inaugurated a series of centers where he said Venezuelans will study socialist ideals while undergoing job training.

The effects of the Chavez reign can be seen in the increase in the number of Venezuelans seeking U.S. asylum.

The latest figures show a surge of Venezuelans moving to the United States either through asylum, permanent residence or other visas. The number of Venezuelans who got green cards in 2005 – almost 11,000 U.S. permanent residents – was more than double those in 2000.

And that just represents those coming here legally….

As disturbing as Chavez’s regime is to Venezuela, his role in international affairs is even more so.  Chavez was successful in buying a Nicaraguan election for his socialist counterpart Daniel Ortega, and came perilously close to doing the same thing in Mexico with his support for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.  He has forged economic treaties with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, courted support from Syria and expressed support for Hizbollah, and thankfully failed in purchasing a seat on the UN Security Council. Hugo Chavez has an agenda. That agenda is not one that is friendly to US interests, basic human rights, or freedom and democracy nor is it confined to Venezuela’s borders.
