Someone please get this guy a pen pal…

Tehran, 29 Nov. (AKI) – Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has sent a letter addressing Americans to be released by Iran’s United Nations mission in New York, the Iranian news agency ISNA reported on Wednesday. According to the agency, the letter would be published later Wednesday. Ahmadinejad had announced earlier this month he would address Americans to explain his viewpoint.

‘We clearly distinguish between the American people and the US government and believe that the US administration has also severely damaged the image of Americans worldwide,’ the president reportedly said at the time.

Earlier this year the president sent a letter to his US counterpart George W. Bush – reportedly the first by an Iranian president to a US counterpart since the Iranian revolution in 1979- and challenged him to a live, televised face-off.

Any suggestions as to who could be Mahmoud’s Pen-Pal?

I was thinking Michael Moore… They have so much in common and could provide each other assistance in what they need most…

Mahmoud could give dieting tips to Michael, and Michael could help out Mahmoud in getting his works published to a wider audience… Literally

If you have other suggestions for Mahmoud’s Pen Pal please leave it in the comments…

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — Lawmakers and cabinet ministers loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have suspended participation in parliament and the government to protest Prime minister Nouri al-Maliki’s summit with U.S. President George W. Bush.

Al-Sadr’s Medhi Army is largely responsible for the violence and bloodshed in Iraq. For Iraq to have any chance at coming together, Al-Sadr and his followers must be held accountable for the death & destruction they have caused. Either Maliki and his government do it or we should.

In recent days, the Lebanese media has been reporting on impending large-scale street demonstrations planned by Hizbullah. According to several reports, last night Hizbullah and its allies met and set the time and date for the launch of these actions; the reports also state that activists from Hizbullah, Amal, and Michel Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement have been placed on alert. The Lebanese, pro-Syrian daily Al-Diyar estimated that the actions would start within 48 hours, stating that Lebanon seems “headed for the unknown,” and that the stubbornness of Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Al-Siniora “has brought Lebanon to the brink of bloodshed.”

Today, November 28, 2006, Lebanese papers also reported that there were several clashes during the night in various areas of Beirut, between activists from Samir Geagea’s Lebanese Forces party and activists from the Free Patriotic Movement, and that these clashes followed attempts by the latter to hang flags and posters of Aoun in the streets of Beirut. Near 1 A.M., about 2,000 activists, from both parties, gathered at Sasin Square and the surrounding streets and taunted and threw stones at each other. Eventually, Lebanese Army soldiers arrived to break up the conflict. A similar clash in the Christian neighborhood of Al-Ashrafiya in the eastern part of the city was broken up by the army and by the internal security forces.

The following are excerpts from recent reports and statements:

Hizbullah Executive Council Chairman Hashem Safi Al-Din

“Lebanon does not have a legitimate and legal government,” continued Safi Al-Din,”but only a group that claims to be a government, a group that is usurping the government… As far as we are concerned, any government or element in the world which regards [the Al-Siniora] government or its decisions as legal is part of the internal [Lebanese] dispute. These elements [should not become involved] in the dispute, since they would thereby become involved in the conflict.”

Hizbullah Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem

“This government must resign, officially and finally, through the resignation of Prime Minister [Al-Siniora]. Alternatively, it must replace [the ministers who resigned] so as to represent all [ethnic] groups in Lebanon. If it remains as it is, it will plunge the country into a legal and governmental vacuum…

On November 28, 2006, the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar, which is close to Hizbullah

“The statement ‘the zero hour is closer than the jugular vein’ is sufficient to explain the preparations by the opposition forces towards the launch of its extensive popular and political plan of action, which will continue until the Fuad Al-Siniora government resigns…

“Yesterday, the opposition forces held the most extensive consultation [meeting to date], far from the eyes of the regime, and it concluded with the setting of the zero hour, when the action on various levels will begin. This action will take place throughout Lebanon.”

On November 28, 2006, the pro-Syrian Lebanese daily Al-Diyar

“According to information exclusive to Al-Diyar, at 11 PM [yesterday, November 27] activists from [Michel Aoun’s party] The Free Patriotic Movement, Hizbullah, and Amal received instructions to be on alert, in advance of a demonstration and a sit-in in front of the prime minister’s residence [in Beirut], and also in a number of other regions. This is aimed at bringing about the resignation of Al-Siniora’s government, and at establishing a government in which all will participate, and there will be a national unity government. “

Remeber those two UNSC Resolutions that stipulated the disarming of Hizbollah and other militant forces…

Biden has yet to officially announce his candidacy for President in 2008, but he is attempting to line up support for himself in South Carolina, which happens to be one of the first primary states.  Illegal Immigration is one of the major issues to South Carolina voters.  Illegal Immigration in the News is one of my more recent posts on the issue in South Carolina.

Here is what Biden said about Illegal Immigration followed by a look at the incoming economic team of Felipe Calderon.

From Delaware online

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Sen. Joe Biden, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s incoming chairman, wants to get tough with Mexico, calling it an “erstwhile democracy” with a “corrupt system” responsible for illegal immigration and drug problems in the United States.

Biden, D-Del., was in Columbia on Monday in his first postelection trip to this first-in-the-South presidential primary state as he continues to line up support for his presidential bid.

Biden is not far off the mark here.  The Socialist Mexican economy has created a class based society of cronieism and corruption. Mexico is rich in natural resources yet any investment in Mexico to take advantage of those resources only lines the pockets of the wealthy ruling class.

Why would anyone invest in Mexico when the rewards of those investments do not go to those who make the investment, but to corrupt politicians and government officials.   Mexico’s President elect Felipe Calderon named his economic team last week that is described as “business friendly”.  Many of those named to Calderon’s cabinet however held key positions in the current and previous administrations — either under President Vicente Fox, or Ernesto Zedillo.  If Calderon’s administration is able to substantially improve the Mexican economy or is just more of the same, only time will tell. However I do like one quote from Javier Lozano who Calderon tapped to be his secretary of labor.

“Instead of labor leaving to go where there is capital, we should be bringing the capital to where the labor force is.”

Actually I think that Omar at Iraq the Model reported on this months ago… during the height of the Israel/Hizbollah conflict in Lebanon.  Amazing that someone in the Old Media finally was able to report on it.

Whatever we decide to do in Iraq… Al Sadr needs to be taken out… we had the oppertunity a couple of times. Unfortunately for political reasons we passed on those oppertunities seeking to include him in part of a political solution instead.

From the New York Times

WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 — A senior American intelligence official said Monday that the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah had been training members of the Mahdi Army, the Iraqi Shiite militia led by Moktada al-Sadr.

The official said that 1,000 to 2,000 fighters from the Mahdi Army and other Shiite militias had been trained by Hezbollah in Lebanon. A small number of Hezbollah operatives have also visited Iraq to help with training, the official said.

Iran has facilitated the link between Hezbollah and the Shiite militias in Iraq, the official said. Syrian officials have also cooperated, though there is debate about whether it has the blessing of the senior leaders in Syria.

The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity under rules set by his agency, and discussed Iran’s role in response to questions from a reporter.

This is a fine example of immigration, or border control, in the United States: Suspected al-Qaeda terrorist Khaled al-Masri has been issued a waiver from the US Department of Homeland Security and awarded a visa by the State Department to enter America. So says a statement from an anonymous source at Foggy Bottom. Khaled al-Masri is known in the CIA Rendition controversy . via Threats Watch

The original UPI article citing the State Department source notes that obtaining a visa does not automatically mean the holder is granted entry into the United States. Admission into America “is granted at the port of entry by inspectors working for the Department of Homeland Security.”That final layer of screening and scrutiny would be the same Department of Homeland Security which just issued the waiver, an action regarding a high-profile case that was surely taken with the scrutiny of the top echelons of DHS leadership. If the DHS has issued the waiver, it would be illogical for DHS screeners to then counter their own department’s directive. …

For perspective, John Rosenthal quotes the German Der Spiegel article that looks closely at al-Masri to illustrate the potential threat he poses and his suspected level of al-Qaeda involvement.

Masri is supposed already before September 11 to have whispered that one “is going to hear something soon” and in conversation said that one “must inflict as much pain on the Americans as they would inflict on people of the Islamic faith.”

Make no mistake, unless something changes in the state of affairs, Khaled al-Masri is coming to America, to be greeted triumphantly by his ACLU lawyers.

Rosenthal calls it “America’s Innovative New Terrorist ‘Waiver’ Program” and Thomas Lifson rightly asks at The American Thinker, “Who’s minding the store?

Sigmund, Carl and Alfred have an outstanding post (same title as this one) that all should read. Especially those who still feel that somehow Bill Clinton was a competent president, that the Media is actually informative, or that the UN is a useful organization.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Authorities closed the Lincoln Memorial on Monday after finding suspicious bottles in a restroom and a note reading “Do you know what anthrax is?” and “Do you know what a bomb is?”, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

Authorities found a bottle appearing to contain a liquid in a basement ladies’ rest room, along with the note, said an official from the Department of Homeland Security who asked to not be identified because his agency was not in charge of the incident.

While investigating the liquid, authorities received a call about a suspicious package, District of Columbia fire spokesman Alan Etter said. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters, U.S. Park Police and the FBI were investigating. Hazardous materials crews in protective suits were seen working at the memorial.

Officials said the incident did not immediately appear to be an emergency.
