Intrepid going in for Overhaul

NEW YORK, New York (1010 WINS)

The retired aircraft carrier U-S-S Intrepid will slip from her Hudson River berth next week and sail on the morning tide.

Not off to war this time, but just five miles down New York harbor to a drydock in Bayonne, New Jersey. The historic World War II vessel will spend two years of refurbishment.

The ship’s departure marks its first move since being saved from the scrapyard and turned into a floating military museum in 19-82. As a museum, the Intrepid has become a top New York City tourist magnet, drawing 700-thousand visitors a year.

The Intrepid’s farewell will begin with pomp and ceremony, including speeches, a Navy flyover and a parade of “honor ships.”

Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, said the voyage to New Jersey will also include a stop near ground zero. A huge American flag will be unfurled as a salute to victims of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Intrepid Stuck, Move Scrubbed for Now

NEW YORK (AP) — The legendary World War II aircraft carrier USS Intrepid got stuck in deep Hudson River mud Monday as powerful tugboats fought to pull it free to tow the floating museum down river for a $60 million overhaul.

The mission was scrubbed at around 10:30 a.m. as the tide went down, said Dan Bender, a Coast Guard spokesman.
