Russian Lawmaker threatens War with Georgia

Russia should occupy Georgia before the unruly ex-Soviet republic ever joins NATO, a senior Russian lawmaker and leader of an ultra-nationalist party, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, told a news conference on Monday.

The only effective solution to what he called “the Georgian issue” is the military attack on Tbilisi, Zhirinovsky is convinced.

Moscow-Tbilisi rail links to be suspended

MOSCOW, October 2 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Railways (RZD) said Monday it was suspending rail travel between Moscow and Tbilisi October 3 following the government’s decision to put a temporary ban on all transportation links with its southern neighbor after an espionage scandal.

Georgia handed over four Russian officers it arrested last week on suspicion of spying to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, but Russia nevertheless halted Monday land, sea, and postal links.

The authorities in Georgia have handed over four Russian army officers detained last week on charges of spying to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

The European security organisation says the four men would be flown on to Russia immediately.

Georgia’s president Mikheil Saakashvili said the transfer was not a response to Russian pressure.

As the men were being released, Moscow imposed economic sanctions, suspending transport and postal links.
