Ohio Legislative Leaders Submit Bill To Crack Down On Illegal Immigration

From Cincinnati Channel 5

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Republican-controlled Ohio Legislature introduced a plan Tuesday to make it harder for illegal immigrants to work and live in the state.

The proposed legislation would prohibit adult illegal immigrants from qualifying for state public assistance programs — including food stamps — and create a new investigative unit within the attorney general’s office to probe Ohio companies that employ illegal immigrants.

The House version of the bill is sponsored by state Rep. Bill Seitz, a Republican from Cincinnati.

Here is the PDF the bill submitted by Rep Seitz, and though it is nearly 50 pages long, below are a few highlights.

Sec. 8.11. (A) No contractor for a public improvement shall begin work on that public improvement unless the contractor submits to the director of administrative services an affidavit that contains a statement affirming both of the following:

  1. The contractor shall not employ, hire, recruit, or refer, either for the contractor or on behalf of another contractor, for a public improvement within this state, an unauthorized alien.
  2. The contractor shall not fail to verify a prospective employee’s legal status or authorization to work prior to employing the individual or contracting with the individual for employment services for that public improvement.

Sec. 8.15.  (A) No person knowingly shall employ any person who is an unauthorized alien to work on any project for which the person received a grant or loan of money from a state agency.

Sec. 8.20. No state institution of higher education shall provide any financial aid in the form of a scholarship, grant, loan, or any other type of monetary assistance to any person who is an illegal alien. As used in this section, “state institution of higher education” has the same meaning as in section 3345.011 of the Revised Code.

The Legislation also provides procedures to establish a Memorandum of Understanding which will allow State Law enforcement officials once properly trained to cooperate with DHS and ICE in the enforcement of our immigration laws.

Like I said the bill is 49 pages long and like all legislation is dry and difficult to read, however it does appear that this legislation is a step in the right dirrection for Ohio and and the rest of the country. Democrats and the Open Borders crowd will of course spin this as legislative racism and an attempt to divert discussion from issues they deem important.
