Following the Brew-ha over Miller Beer (pun intended) sponsoring the labor day march in Chicago, I decided to look a little more closely at the corporate sponsorship of one of the groups that advocate various elements of immigration reform. The group I chose was  LULAC. Not all of what this groups advocates is unreasonable, for example the insistence on decreasing the bureaucratic nightmare that those who desire to come to this country legally must endure… The fact that it may take several years, over a decade in many cases, for immigration applications to finlay be approved or disapproved is ridiculous.

LULAC also opposes any form of expanded guest worker programs, however they also oppose providing the tools necessary to businesses and corporations to determine the legal status of employees and applicants. They also oppose expanded border security especially utilizing the National Guard to augment the Border Patrol.

LULAC’s Legislative platform for 2006-2007 Includes the following:

LULAC supports legislation to grant licenses to immigrants under any status. LULAC supports innovative provisions for the issuance of a license such as passing a criminal background check, endorsement by a citizen, or requiring a pledge by immigrants to apply for legal residency. LULAC opposes any legislation that would place immigrants at risk by highlighting their status.

LULAC strongly supports the Student Adjustment Act and the DREAM Act.LULAC urges all states to pass laws that allow undocumented immigrant children who have completed high school, are of good moral character, and reside in the state to be admitted to colleges and universities as residents and eligible for in-state tuition.

The Dream Act allows students who are not legal residents in the country let alone the state in which they reside to receive in-state tuition. Note that following graduation it is still illegal to hire them.

LULAC strongly opposes all legislation that designates English as the official language of the United States or of any individual state. LULAC supports bilingual education to ensure English proficiency while encouraging students to retain proficiency in their native language.

LULAC urges Congress to pass laws that provide stronger sentencing and more aggressive prosecution for hate crimes. The federal government’s role should be expanded in the prosecution of hate crimes by being allowed to assist state and local efforts to prosecute a broader scope of hate crimes.

Essentially this seeks to punish criminals for the motive rather than the crime. A murderer should be incarcerated and punished based on the crime he or she committed not his motive for committing the crime to begin with. Motive can be and has been a used as a factor in the sentencing of crimes in our Legal System. However making the motive behind any act the criminal act rather than the act itself is a very dangerous precedent to set.

Universal health care is a priority for Latinos that includes affordable and accessible primary, preventive, and emergency room health care that is culturally competent.

LULAC also insists on a path to citizenship for the 8 – 20 Million illegal living in the US illegally and opposes the use of local law enforcement to assist the DHS in enforcing our laws.

LULAC also provides a list of Corporations that assist them in advancing their agenda.

Altria Corporate Services, Inc.

Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc.
AT&T Corp.

LULAC also provides a congressional scorecard, rating Senators and Representatives on their votes on issues that LULAC deems important… Although I have not read each grade of the ones I have read the only Republican listed above 50% was John McCain with 67%. Even Susan Collins and Olympia Snow the liberal Republicans from Maine only got 50% as did Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.
