London/Washington Flight 923 Diverted to Boston

Scroll down for updates:

BOSTON –An overseas flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Washington, D.C. was diverted to Boston on Wednesday after the pilot declared an emergency because of a passenger disturbance, the airline said.

A female passenger aboard United Flight 923 had Vaseline, a screw driver, matches and a note referencing al-Qaida, according to Phil Orlandella, spokesman for Boston’s Logan International Airport.

He said the flight was escorted to Boston by two fighter jets.

The flight, with 182 passengers and 12 crew members landed safely, United spokesman Brandon Borrman said. Borrman said a female passenger was spotted engaging in some “suspicious” activity, but he could not immediately say what the activity was.

A Few questions that need answers here..

  1. How did she get the Screw Driver & Vaseline on board? Both are banned from the being in the cabin.
  2. Today is Aug 16th, the date that the terror plot Brits busted last week was to be executed. Were there Air Marshals on-board and if not why not?
  3. Was she traveling alone, or were others traveling with her?

Some other info not covered in the article

  • The Plane was escorted by F-15’s to Boston.
  • Other reports say there was a disturbance on-board because the woman was claustrophobic.

UPDATED 11:40 AM Via the AP

There was no indication of terrorism, a federal security official said.

A Transportation Safety Administration official denied reports that the woman had a screwdriver, matches, Vaseline and a letter referencing al-Qaida.

The female passenger aboard United Flight 923 said she was claustrophobic and became very upset and got into some kind of confrontation with the flight crew, said George Naccara, federal security director for the Transportation Security Administration for Massachusetts’ airport.

This brings up another Question..

How the hell did the spokesman get this so wrong? How and Why did he release a very specific list of items that it turns out she did not have?

At the end of the day, If all we have to criticize in all this is the erronious report we should be thankfull… The Flight crew, the Military escorts, and emergency responders all performed with calm and professionalism.

  1. I agree this raises some worrying questions. How did the spokesman get it so wrong? There seem to be a lot of conflicting opinions here over what actually happened on that flight. Also if the woman did indeed have vaseline and matches, not sure how she got them on board. It looks like the security staff were not doing their job properly. I’m from England and due to fly myself in a few weeks’ time. The state things are in here, we’re not even sure if the flight will still be going and people are still very confused as to what does and doesn’t pass for hand luggage.

  2. Wow, way off base there. Hmmmm. Interesting.

  3. Naomi and Jenn;

Thank you both for your comments. I have no Idea where or how the spokesman got the information he distributed but thankfully that is what we are criticizing today. All the procedures (provided the reports of the screwdriver and vaseline were false) appear to have been followed. and the situation was handeled efficiently and effectively.
