Israel cease fire proposal pending approval from Israeli Cabinet

From Fox News

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has accepted an emerging Mideast cease-fire deal and informed the United States of his decision, Israeli officials said Friday.

Olmert will recommend that his government approve the deal in its upcoming meeting on Sunday, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief journalists on the internal discussions.

An Israeli official said the renewed offensive will continue at least until the government votes on the cease-fire agreement.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopts resolution

The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday that calls for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, and authorizes the deployment of 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws.

The resolution requires Hezbollah to cease all hostilities, while it only requires Israel to cease offensive operations. It also requires the end of military support for Hezbollah and the exercise of sovereignty over southern Lebanon by the Lebanese government. We have heard this before from the same UN Security Council… What could make anyone believe that this time the UN will follow through and actually enforce the resolutions they pass.

Somehow I do not have any confidence that this ceasefire will in any way resolve anything… All it will do is prolong the conflict. Put it off for another day when Hizbollah is better armed dug in to more secure positions and able to inflict more damage on Israeli civillians.. The end result will be that both sides will suffer far more casualties.

Rattling the Kettle points out that the resolution makes no mention what so ever of the two soldiers kidnapped by Hizbollah that kicked off this whole mess.

Captains Quarters has a good summary of the resolution covering both good and bad points of it..
