Immigrant rights coalition exposes Lou Dobbs’ racism

Cross Posted From DeMediacratic Nation

It would appear that anything having to do with Lou Dobbs these days is a no no; at least as far as illegal immigrants rights groups are concerned.

According to the group, May 1 Coalition:

We are tired of CNN and Lou Dobbs converting their programming to a racist campaign against immigrants.

Who would have thought CNN would be a part of so scandalous a “campaign.”

Dobbs is considered a “xenophobe,” and “racist,” and according to Sharon Black of the coalition:

(his) “message of hatred is to divide the people. Dobbs speaks to the middle class in the United States saying that immigrants take away work and benefits from U.S. workers, and that is a lie.”

Here is an example of Mr. Dobbs hatred as originally posted by InMuscatine back on May 25th:

Illegal aliens are more important to this Congress than securing our borders and our ports, more important than those legal immigrants who have waited in line and who follow the law. The Senate has added to the litany of lunacy that makes up what it calls reform: Illegal aliens would only have to pay back taxes on three of the past five years, they will not be prosecuted for felonies such as identity theft or purchasing or using fraudulent Social Security cards, and unlike millions of visa holders who have to leave the country to have them renewed, they may simply remain in the United States while this Congress and this president give away all the benefits and privileges of American citizenship.

I see nothing too fishy there, so perhaps I too am a xenophobe and racist. Or it just might be that this is a slam against the Congress and President of this country, who with regard to “immigration reform” don’t seem to be listening to the people they are accountable to.

But I don’t think Teresa Gutiérrez of the May 1 Coalition who sent a letter to Dobbs would agree with me. In her letter she stated :

“We stand in solidarity with all immigrants and demand full legalization and full rights for all. We believe that no worker is illegal. … Immigrants do not close factories, lay off workers and send shops abroad in search of cheaper labor, deny health care to the people of this country [or] raise the cost of gas to exorbitant costs.”

Perhaps they should stand somewhere else. Maybe if Ms. Gutierrez and others stood in the shoes of “middle class” Americans (the ones being spoon fed hate by CNN and Dobbs), or the shoes of some sap that chose to follow the legal guidelines to U.S. entry and citizenship they would understand. But I don’t think that is going to happen.

After all, May 1 Coalition leader, Chris Silvera, (who is secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 808 and chair of the Teamsters National Black Caucus)

denounced Dobbs as an agent of the corporations which have impoverished Third World nations, noting that “free trade” has “restructured” the world economy to make profits for big business. This capitalist restructuring has forced immigrants to leave home to seek work in the U.S. “Dobbs creates disunity among U.S. workers.”

And being a good Union leader means aggressively chasing and enlisting union members for union members dues to fill their dusty coffers. So what if they’re not citizens of the country, they should be, the unions need the money and the political clout.
