Sudan and the UN come to agreement on Darfur…. Or not

Where have peace keepers been deployed that actually been able to keep peace? The Balkans, where UN Peace Keepers turned their backs while Serbs massacred hundreds of people? Nope…. How about in Lebanon where the UN Forces not only didn’t disarm the Terror groups, they actually allowed Hizbollah to build fortifications in close proximity to UN facilities. Again Nope……. or in the Congo where UN Peacekeepers sexually abused girls as young as 13. Again the answer is No.

We have to get away from believing or pretending that the UN is has the solution to any problem beyond providing retirement nest eggs for corrupt bureaucrats like Kofi Annan.

Sudan agreed in principle to a plan that will permit an international force to bolster African troops in Darfur, but almost immediately signaled it will be difficult to progress from an accord to real change in one of the world’s bloodiest conflict zones.

Shortly after diplomats reached the agreement in Ethiopia, the Sudanese foreign minister in Khartoum raised objections, insisting the accord entailed the provision of only U.N. technical assistance – not peacekeepers. Sudan has long opposed allowing U.N. peacekeepers into Darfur, saying that would violate its sovereignty.
