The federal government has a message for employers: Knowingly allow illegal immigrants to work for you and you’ll get in trouble, too.
Announcing charges Thursday against a Wichita company, Bob Eisel Powder Coatings, U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren said officials are stepping up efforts to prosecute illegal immigrants and people who knowingly employ them.
“American businesses have a clear responsibility to obey the law,” Melgren said. “Businesses that knowingly employ illegal workers are undermining our laws, violating the public trust and contributing to the problem of illegal immigration.”
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says that work site enforcement is a priority and that the office is prosecuting and using asset forfeiture far more than the former Immigration and Naturalization Service.
The ICE says that nationally, criminal arrests of employers in immigration cases have increased from 24 in fiscal year 1999 and 25 in fiscal year 2002 to 160 in fiscal year 2004 and 176 in fiscal year 2005.
So far this fiscal year, investigators have made 445 arrests.
“All employers need to know: It’s a crime to know you are hiring an illegal alien,” Melgren said.
I welcome the feds cracking down on these unscrupulous employers, but considering the federal govt has pretty much been absent in enforcing these laws in the past I have my doubts. I hope that what we are seeing is a commitment to enforcement and not another attempt to placate the majority of Americans who want the laws of this country enforced.
