Nineteen illegal immigrants facing deportation after a nationwide workplace crackdown got a reprieve Thursday, as political pressure on their behalf grew.
The Chicago-area workers were arrested in April as part of a nationwide sweep at IFCO Systems, a manufacturing company.
On Thursday, two immigration judges continued until Oct. 12 the cases of six local IFCO employees and until July 31 the cases of 13 other workers.
The Department of Homeland Security trumpeted the sweep as a new get-tough approach against illegal workers. But immigrant activists say the 1,000 IFCO arrests in 26 states are a form of intimidation.
