Senate Democratic Leader Harry M. Reid (Nev.) accepted free ringside tickets from the Nevada Athletic Commission to three professional boxing matches while that state agency was trying to influence him on federal regulation of boxing.

Reid took the free seats for Las Vegas fights between 2003 and 2005 as he was pressing legislation to increase government oversight of the sport, including the creation of a federal boxing commission that Nevada's agency feared might usurp its authority.

He defended the gifts, saying that they would never influence his position on the bill and he was simply trying to learn how his legislation might affect an important home state industry. "Anyone from Nevada would say I'm glad he is there taking care of the state's number one businesses," he said. "I love the fights anyways, so it wasn't like being punished," added the senator, a former boxer and boxing judge.

Senate ethics rules generally allow lawmakers to accept gifts from federal, state or local governments, but specifically warn against taking such gifts — particularly on multiple occasions — when they might be connected to efforts to influence official actions.

Two other Senators were present at the events. John McCain who paid for his tickets, and John Ensign who recused himself in the pending legislation. Democrats have portrayed corruption as an exclusively Republican club.. Infact it is truely Bipartisan. Will Dems demand Reid resign his leadership position at least, since he is obviously part of the "Culture of Corruption"? Somehow I doubt it..

    Oh, poppycock.

A state agency gave him tickets (permitted by Nevada law) and he voted against the agency anyway.

    Where’s the beef?

No companies bribed him with millions of dollars or property or boats or golf trips to Scotland.

He took on the crooks in Vegas and they bombed his car.
    This man is no crook.
Don’t try to paint him as one.
You will look silly and lose respect.

  2. Darrell, thanks for commenting on my site. I left you a message there. (smiling)

  3. > This man is no crook.
    > Don’t try to paint him as one.
    > You will look silly and lose respect.

But you won’t lose respect if you paint Tom DeLay as a crook because he’s a Republican. That’s how it works. DeLay has been smeared by a partisan judge with baseless charges which have about ruined his career, we snicker about Dirty Harry Reid and we look silly.

  4. Dale;

Dirty Harry is as much a crook as Tom Delay, Duke Cunningham, or William Jefferson. Infact looking at the Abramhoff scandal alone, Reid, Patrick Kennedy, Patty Murray, and Charlie Rangle each got more $ from Abramhoff than Tom Delay did. Notice that Tom Delay resigned from congress, while all the Dems remain in congress. Granted Kennedy represents his constituants from the Detox ward of the Mao Clinic.

So go ahead Dale, tell me again how swell of a guy Harry Reid is, and tell us again about that Republican Culture of Corruption. But you can look on the bright side.. you can finally put Dirty Harry’s name together with “Fight” and “Corruption” without lying.

    Darrell,
Jack Abramoff gave no money to dems…ever.
I never said that Republicans were corrupt or mentioned Tom Delay.
I defended Harry Reid, no more, no less.
I will say that Alberto Gonzales is really cleaning house on both sides of the aisle and I support his efforts.

  6. Reid was a mob backed boxing ref and is a puppet of the mob and the oil industry: he took $68,000 from Jack Abramoff and influenced indian tribes, he received a million dollar bribe grandfathered in as a phony property buy/sell by Jay Brown, his Las Vegas cohort, when rezoning influenced by Reid allowed Brown’s properties to boom when a shopping mall was developed, and he too free ringside tickets from the Boxing Commission and voted down organization of a state agency that would have eliminated the Commission.

His real agenda is and always has been lining his pockets and playing the role.

    All else is BS.

Word now has it that Reid had dealings (more than we are aware of) with Jack Abramoff. Anyone taking bets he is one of the 6 or so Abramoff was talking about?
